OC Students and OC Sheriff’s Explorers participate in Fill the House program to assist battered victims

July 23rd, 2010 by Darrell Lum

DUILA’s NEXT STEP members and OC Sheriff Explorers helped make a local Human Options shelter house into a “home.” 40 victims of domestic violence – women with children – rely on this confidential location for safety, counseling, and support for 45 days after fleeing their abusive situation. Donations were collected and combined with donations collected from KIA Motors of Irvine to help the victims of domestic violence through a partnership with Human Options program.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol boat made an unexpected arrival and gave a demonstration for the students and Explorers.

Students from various Orange County high schools attended the event not only for a worthy cause, but to enjoy a little sun, fun and relaxation. Students also earned community service hours for their efforts.

Community Program’s Next Step Mentoring Program teaches middle schoolers about drugs

March 9th, 2010 by Darrell Lum

High school students participate in Next Step program as positive role models and mentors to hundreds of 8th grade students in Orange County. These photographs were taken during a drug prevention presentation.

Deputy Scott Yuen provides training to the high school students regarding current drug trends, symptomology, identification and the drug’s physiological effects. The students work as a team to develop a 45 minute presentation to address drug abuse and its dangers. Various forms of teaching techniques are used to engage the 8th grade students. Creativeness and variety is encouraged to develop unique ways of getting younger students to deter drug abuse. This proved to be an effective and fun way to get the younger students to remember information from the drug presentation.
