On October 23, 2008, Ms. Alison Young, Special Assistant to the President of the United States and Acting Director of the USA Freedom Corps, arrived in to Orange County to visit the Orange County Rescue Mission’s Village of Hope and OperationOC Emergency Operations Center to witness first-hand and to acknowledge the great volunteer effort. Jim Palmer, Board Member for the Corporation for National and Community Service and President of the Orange County Rescue Mission welcomed 290 volunteers to the newly opened Village of Hope. Volunteers from HomeAid Orange County, Professional Services Responders from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and volunteers from the Orange County Rescue Mission gathered in the newly opened Village of Hope’s Chapel to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Awards.
Scott Larson, Executive Director of HomeAid Orange County, Assistant Sheriff Jack Anderson of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Jim Palmer assisted Special Assistant Young in presenting bronze awards to all the volunteers who had served 200 volunteer hours; silver awards to those who served up to 500 hours; and gold awards to those who served over 1,000 hours.
The Sheriff’s Department Color Guard presented the colors. Ms. Young shared how impressed she was with the efforts of the volunteers that included the building industry, professional services industry, law enforcement, and the philanthropic communities. Ms. Young committed to returning to the White House and sharing what she had witnessed in Orange County with the President.
We want to congratulate all of the efforts these outstanding men and women have made to make this a remarkable County in which to live!
